📜 Akad nikah · #109

On the marriage application form, must I state that I have been divorced before?

Yes; marital status must be stated honestly, and divorce documents are usually requested as proof. Hiding your status on an official form is an offence and can harm your application. For women, the religious office must also make sure the waiting period (iddah) has ended before the contract. Prepare copies of the divorce certificate or court order early. More importantly, your future spouse and their family should hear it from you yourself. Honesty at the start becomes the foundation of trust in a new home. Allah says: “say a word directed to the Right” (Surah al-Ahzab 33:70). See marrying someone who has been divorced.
