I am a foreigner married to a Malaysian. My husband has disappeared and left me with our child. What are our rights?

Your child is still entitled to maintenance from their father, and you as a wife are also entitled to maintenance as long as the marriage still exists. These rights do not fall away just because you are not a citizen. To a wife whose husband was miserly, the Prophet ﷺ said: “Take what is sufficient for you and your children, in a fair manner” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5364). Gather your marriage certificate, your child's birth certificate and proof that your husband no longer provides maintenance. Take these documents to the state Islamic religious affairs office or the Syariah Court for advice on claiming maintenance and other options. Also ask the Immigration Department about your pass status so that it does not expire without your noticing. For urgent needs, you can contact a nearby mosque, zakat centre or welfare body. See child maintenance.
