My Indonesian wife wants to give birth in her hometown so that her mother can look after her. What do we need to think about?
That wish is reasonable, but plan early because it involves health, travel and the child's documents in two countries. Ask the doctor up to what stage of pregnancy your wife can still fly safely, and check the airline's conditions. Get a copy of her antenatal records to take along, and identify a hospital near her hometown in case of complications. Ask the Malaysian embassy there how to register the child's birth, and see to it as soon as the baby is born. Discuss your own role too: when you will come, and how the costs will be covered. The cost of childbirth remains the husband's responsibility even if the wife gives birth in her hometown. See registering a child born abroad.
