Q&A › Khitbah & engagement

💍 Khitbah & engagement · #92

My parents have not yet agreed to my proposing to the girl I have chosen. How do I persuade them?

First listen fully to their reasons, because you cannot answer a worry you do not yet understand. Perhaps they are worried about the girl's family background, your career or your own readiness. Ask calmly: ‘What worries you most, Mum and Dad?’ Then deal with each concern one by one, for example by taking them to meet the girl's family or showing them your financial plan. Avoid giving ultimatums or sulking for long periods. Ask someone they respect, such as an uncle or the imam, to act as an intermediary. Give it time; consent that comes slowly is often firmer. Allah says: “And, out of kindness, lower to them the wing of humility” (Surah al-Isra' 17:24). See marrying without parental blessing.
