🧒 Raising children (tarbiyah) · #9
Is the ʿaqīqah obligatory or recommended (sunnah)?
The narrations are clear; the status of the ruling is disputed.
Among the wordings we have: every boy is held in pledge for his ʿaqīqah, and in another narration the Prophet ﷺ said two goats for a boy and one for a girl. A narration in Sunan an-Nasa'i records him as saying: whoever wishes to sacrifice for his child, let him do so — wording that some read as optional, not obligatory. From these two sets of wording, one view holds it obligatory and another holds it recommended. We do not name a school for either view because we do not hold works of fiqh here.

Difference among the schools. The wording “held in pledge for his ʿaqīqah” is read as an obligation by some jurists, while the wording “whoever wishes to sacrifice” is read as recommended by others. This difference is set out without naming a school.
