My husband works night shifts. How is his rotation counted?

For a husband who works at night, the basis of the rotation shifts to the daytime, which is when he rests and is at home.
Shafi'i jurists explain that the basis of the rotation is a person's time of rest: for most people that is the night, but for security guards, nurses or night-shift workers, the day becomes the basis. The main principle remains the same: quality time at home is divided equally. If shift schedules vary, the husband may plan the cycle in blocks of days with his wives' agreement. Keeping a transparent schedule helps avoid misunderstandings. See Managing the rotation.
